Vaastu Shastra

  What is Vaastu Vidya ?

The term Vaastu Vidya draws attention to a beautiful world of practical science that although ancient, but is very much alive and kicking. Indian social life has been shaped for centuries by this science. It brings forward a suggestion to embrace a different life culture that is a perfect solution to problems faced in the modern world.

The History of Vaastu Vidya:

Vaastu Vidya is a construction technology that has originated in India even before 10,000 B.C. Archeological remnants of the Indus Valley Civilization including its multi-storied buildings, effective system of drainage and even its dockyards have been found to have strong influence of modern technology. This Civilization is actually the place where Vaastu Vidya has been born.

Not confined to Hindu culture only:

Even architecture pertaining to Jainism and Buddhism has been strongly influenced by Vaastu Vidya. A lot of books have also been written on this subject. A large number of old monuments still proudly stand in the modern ages and thereby proclaim the great values of this architectural science. Even in modern times, particularly in India, most constructions are undertaken as per guidelines that have been set by Vaastu Vidya.

It has successfully withstood Tests of Time:

A vital fact that needs to be noted is that other civilizations have also followed their respective architecture. But none of them have been able to withstand the tests of time as well as the Indus Valley Civilization. This shows that Vaastu Vidya has been as much effective in the ancient times as it can be in the modern scenario. The scientific practicality on which this form of knowledge has been based can be attributed to be the main reason for its success.

Multiple specialization of this knowledge form:

Vaastu Vidya specializes in multiple constructional disciplines. It has been successfully used in the construction of temples and residences, military and urban settlement construction, commercial structures, town planning and many more. The best part is that this science is not confined to any geographical boundaries and embraces the whole planet in itself. If used in an office set up, the science is shown favoring financial prosperity as well as smooth management of functions.

Its relationship with Nature:

One of the main facets of Vaastu Shastra is its co-existence with nature. The sublime and scientific nature of this ancient science was displayed in the massive earthquake that had struck Gujarat some years back. Although most of the modern structures collapsed in this devastating natural calamity, most of the temples in the state were not harmed at all.
Vaastu Vidya does not wish to impose itself on nature and accepts it in the purest form. This is because the science has accepted the fact that nature has been existent even before the evolution of human beings. Hence, the five key elements of Nature – Earth, Water, Wind, Fire and Space – have been accorded paramount importance by this science.

These five elements are the basis for sustaining life on this planet. These elements have always maintained an unbiased and impartial effect towards human beings. Vaastu Vidya is also designed at maintaining this balance between human beings and these five elements so that maximum benefits can be derived from the same.

                           Vastu guidlines
Vaastu, which literally means ‘house’, is a science (shastra) of arranging the five elements – earth, water, fire, air and sky in complete harmony. Experts say that the fundamental principle of vaastu shastra is to add value to a man’s life. Behind every vaastu guideline, there is a scientific reasoning that aims at providing an organized and convenient life to everyone. Believe it or not, vaastu does have its effects and a few changes in your house can bring a lot of peace in your life.

Keeping in mind the ‘ready-to-move-in’ houses (where changes related to ‘architecture’ are not possible), we caught up with the renowned vaastu expert Jai Madaan and resolve 20 feasible changes you can bring in to balance the equilibrium of the house.

1. At the entrance if you have a naked wall, place a statue or a picture of Ganesha. Since a naked wall represents loneliness, it is a good way to conceal it.

2. If the boring of your building or house has been placed in the wrong direction, it is best to have a picture of Panchmukhi Hanuman, facing South-West to the boring.

3. North –east direction is the best place for meditation. Do meditate in this direction for spiritual growth.

4. Place scenery in the North East direction depicting a long road for good vision and planning.

5. Place a family photograph in the south-west direction in a yellow or golden frame for healthy family relations. Or a picture / painting of sunflower for a healthy family bond.

6.

Place a picture or painting of a rising sun in the east direction for healthy social relations.
7. Place the study table of your kids in the east direction for improvement in studies.

8. Numbers of doors and windows should be even in the house.

9. Placing red galloping horses in the south direction can provide a steady flow of money and bring harmony.

10. Keep a single mattress on the bed for healthy marital relation. Also, the wife should always sleep on the left side of the husband.

11. Remove all the useless clutter, especially under your bed. It weighs you down and keeps your mind subtly connected to the past, which does not allow forward progress.

12. The bedroom should not be left in the dark; it should be well lit Avoid using dark colours on the bedroom wall to bring harmony and peace.

13. Place natural green plants or candles in the bathroom to remove negativity and bring brightness.

14. The kitchen plays a major role in determining the relationship in a family. Maintain maximum distance between gas and sink in the kitchen.

15. The bedroom should be planned in south-west direction to enhance the relationships.

16. Avoid sleeping in any direct arrangement with sharp corners. Sharp corners act as energy spears and create stress in the nervous system.

17. Fix a fish aquarium in north-east direction of your house for better growth and to reduce negative energy.

18. Place a water fountain in the north-east direction of your house for harmony.

19. Placing pyramids is an effective and pocket-friendly way is good for curbing all the vastu defects of a house or a building. These are installed in the strategic location in the house such as the centre of the house, a specific room or even an energetic key point.

20.

Place green plants in the east direction for healthy relations.

What is Grading of Vaastu Plots ?

Vaastu Shastra is an important category in modern housing patterns. The use of Vaastu elements and its effects have always played a major role in designing and planning a house. Today people are eager to consult Vaastu experts for all necessities whether it remains housing or business needs. It gives you the hope to eliminate the chances of negativity or possible accidents. Hence Vaastu has always been considered important if not mandatory. Like every designing and planning system Vaastu Shastra too can grade a particular plot for you. There are different reasons and considerations basis which this decision or grading is evaluated. The first concern always remains with respect to geographical locations. There are four main grading categories:

First Grade Plots

Grading of plots is often done after scanning through barren or open plots. These plots are always considered prime plots. People are always considered lucky to own such plots. The way to judge is by observing roads on all four sides of the plot. It will also be great if the plots are in a square or rectangular shape. They must also have a slope towards the eastern and northern sides. These plots could always have hills, tall buildings on the western and southern sides. These plots are often called as Bramha Stavam. Lands on all four sides will bring in lots of positivity. Plots that have road on the east and northern directions which could possibly extend to the north-eastern directions are called first grade plots. The roads, ponds or lakes on the Northern or Eastern side could also be very auspicious.

Second Grade Plots

These plots will have low lying roads on the eastern and western directions. These plots have their slopes or a river on the East. The possibility of roads on the northern and southern side will also be considered auspicious. You would often find the slopes of such plots to face northwards. Such plots also tend to have hills and mountains towards the southern direction. If the plot only has one road towards the northern and eastern direction, it would still fall under the second grade. The road on the western side will definitely be lower than the roads facing northern or eastern directions.

Third Grade Plots

Mostly grading of plots follows any particular pattern. Some plots might have a downward slope which might either face the western side or eastern side. These plots could very well have a downward facing slope on the eastern direction. They might end up having buildings and mountains towards the western or southern directions. Some plots also have mountains facing the eastern direction whereas roads could be facing northern, western or southern directions.

Fourth Grade Plots

These plots will only have one road which would normally face the Southern or Western direction. The roads would normally face south or at the max east. These plots will also have hills and tall buildings on the eastern, northern or western zones. Most of these plots will have roads simultaneously attached to the Northern or Southern directions. A downward slope would be essential towards the Southern zone of such plots. You will also notice a river or some kind of valley towards the Southern direction. You could observe roads with an oblique cut towards the South-western or South-eastern direction.

The Basic 5 Elements

Vaastu Shastra is a directional science that effectively combines five elements of cosmos and nature. The science then balances the same with human beings and materials. It is believed that the universe is composed of five elementary elements – Air, Water, Fire, Space and Earth. These elements also combine to compose the human body.

Relationship between the elements and human body:

It is said that the five natural elements have a co-relation with the five sensory organs that human beings have, these are:

  • Taste
  • Smell
  • Sight
  • Touch
  • Hearing

  • Knowledge of Directions:

In order to achieve correct orientation, one needs to have the knowledge of the eight main directions. It is known to all that the Sun rises from the East. In order to know the other basic directions, the following thumb rule can be followed. [li]Stand facing the rising Sun, hence automatically you will be facing East.[/li] [li]This also means that the direction of your back will be towards the West.[/li] [li]Extend your hand to the left, it indicates the North direction.[/li] [li]If you extend out your right hand, it is going to point South.[/li] In Vaastu Shastra, a vital importance has been given to the corners, which serve as meeting points of these directions. This, therefore, points to four other directions, namely Northeast, East South, Southwest, and West North. All directions have their own individual significance and hence call for different constructions. Hence, the directions play a main role in formulating the principles of Vaastu Shastra.

    Five Natural Elements:

As mentioned in Vaastu, the nature contains in itself numerous beneficial energies that human beings need to make use of in order to maintain a balance in their lives and also experience a feeling of wellness. These energies mainly evolve from two sources; they are the five natural elements as well as electromagnetic energy that get generated as the Earth rotates. Presence of the five natural elements has been attributed to be the main reason why the Earth is the only planet in the Solar System that has existence of life in it. There is universal availability of air, space and Sun and human beings can mould these three elements according to their needs, through designing according to guidelines of Vaastu. In order to get an idea of the individual role played by these five natural elements, one needs to individually discuss the properties of each of these elements.

    Earth:

The Earth is known for its magnetic and gravitational qualities and is the one natural element that connects to the five sensory organs within the human body. Hence, this natural element has the biggest influence on human lives.

    Water:

This is also a very important natural element and quantitatively, the largest among the five. It constitutes greater than 80% of the human body and also makes up two-thirds of the surface of the Earth. Vaastu helps in deciding the places where the water sources have to be placed in a construction.

    Fire:

The Sun serves as the biggest source of energy and life. True to its own characteristics, it provides us with strength and vitality. However, the sun may also contain harmful rays, which have to block as per recommendations of Vaastu.

    Air:

This is the most fundamental natural element as survival of human beings depends on it. Air available on our planet is a combination of a lot of gases including Oxygen, Nitrogen, Hydrogen and Helium. These are all essential for humans. Vaastu provides guidelines in building construction so that the maximum benefit from this natural element can be derived.

    Space:

This natural element is infinite and is not restricted to any geographical boundaries. It is linked to the central portion of any construction site, which definitely needs to be kept open as per Vaastu guidelines. If the element of Space is disturbed, it can result in hindrance of progress and growth.
